Venue: Dr. Hickey Park
Tries: Bobby Clancy (1) Ben Armstrong (1) Conversions: Ross Spillane (1) Andrew Kealy (1) Penalties: Ross Spillane (2)
Saturday was a day packed with rugby and high expectations commencing at the early hour of 6am with Ireland in their in their charge towards a first ever World Cup semi-final appearance which sadly was halted emphatically by Wales in Wellington. Many hours later Greystones welcomed Malone RFC to Dr Hickey Park for their first home fixture of the 2011/2012 AIL campaign.
Hopes were high for Greystones as they looked to bounce back from the disappointment of the opening match. Reggie Corrigan’s men were up for the task and battled hard for a win that came in the last minute of the match thanks to a try from Captain Ben Armstrong with the necessary conversion from Andrew Kealy.
Malone made a very promising start going 8 points ahead in the first 6 minutes thanks to a very early penalty and a try. Stones opened their account on ten minutes with when Ross Spillane slotted over a penalty kick however Stones were to concede a penalty to Malone a few minutes later.
Bobby Clancy scored Stones first try going through the phases to eventually find a gap in the Malone defence and Ross Spillane converted to give the home side a narrow 13 – 11 lead. Malone came back with a penalty before half time to take a 1 point lead into the break.
The stars of the future from the U11’s entertained the crowd with a half time match on the main pitch. These half time games are very popular and as most of our First XV has come up through the Youth Section we will hopefully see these young stars play at a senior level for Stones in years to come. These half time matches will be a feature at all our home games.
The second half saw Malone add an additional 5 points early on with a try in the corner which saw the leading 13 - 19. It was a very physical affair and neither side were making any major impact with both sides looking for a break through. It was looking like time was running out for stones when Ben Armstrong powered across the line to give a score line of 18 – 19 with a crucial conversion kick to come. Andrew Kealy delivered with the last kick of the day.
Greystones are away to Queens next week and the next home fixture will be the first AIL under lights on Friday 28th October v DLSP
