Greystones took a step closer to promotion to Division 2 and set up what should be the Division 3 three title decider against Seapoint next week with their great win over Naas last Saturday.
Stones ran in six tries to continue to be the highest point scoring side the Ulster Bank League on a dry and windy day in Dr. Hickey Park. Greystones laid down an early marker when Ben Armstrong crossed the line for his first try five minutes into the game and Andrew Kealy stepped up to convert to give the home side am early lead. Naas were not going to give an easy run for Stones and fought back and were rewarded with a converted try at the end of the first quarter to level the score. Naas seized the opportunity to add three points with a drop goal five minutes before half time to take a three point lead. Despite continued pressure from Naas Stones took advantage of a break to cross for a try converted by Andrew Kealy just on half time to give Stones a 14 -10 lead at the break.
After a very entertaining half time mach from the future stars of the Greystones Under 10’s the Senior XV resumed with an increased intensity and were rewarded when Ronan Carroll crossed the line four minutes after the re-start and once again Andrew Kealy added the extra two points and he went on to add an additional seven points when he converted his own try five minutes later to give Stones a 28 to 10 lead.
It was full steam ahead for Stones now and they looked very comfortable on the ball as they played a full flowing game of rugby and set a pace that Naas could not match. Ben Armstrong scored his hat-trick when on the hour he made the last five meters to touch down a try and when Kealy converted gave Stones a dominant 35 – 10 lead.
Simon Malone added the last points for the home side the he received the ball deep in his own half with a clear run to the Naas line and outpaced the defence to score in the corner.
Naas did not give up the battle and scored a try in the last ten minutes but Greystones had done enough hard work to secure the win and held firm until the final whistle. The win moves Greystones into second place in The Ulster Bank League with just two matches left in the season.
