Celebrations were in full flow at Dr Hickey Park last Saturday when Greystones secured promotion to Division 2a in the Ulster Bank League with a 35 to 5 points win over Navan in the last match of the season.
It has been a long hard season in what was a very tightly contested group with Stones finishing in third place with 57 points only one point behind 1st and 2nd jointly on 58 points. It was very much mission accomplished as the prime objective for the season was to gain promotion and we are proud to have challenged for the title during the season. Stones played a fantastic style of rugby throughout the season and racked up an amazing 506 points along the way top points scoring team in Division 3 and second highest in the whole of the Ulster Bank League.
Expectations were very high for the last match of the season and being a home game brought plenty of support for Stones with large crowd enjoying the pre-match lunch. The match kicked off and you could sense the nervousness of the home side as they enjoyed most of the possession but never really threatened the Navan try line in the first quartes. Andrew Kealy did find some reward for Stones with three penalties before Alan O’Toole finally found a gap in the Navan defence to touch down for a try on the half hour. Andrew Kealy was very unlucky not to convert just clipping inside of the post. Stones went into the break leading 14 points to 0.

Seven minutes after the re-start Alan Dempsey added to the score with a try converted by Andrew Kealy from a passage of play that started in the Stones 22 where Stones turned from defence to attack to open up the Navan defence. The Stones scrum was very strong all afternoon and we won a lot of ball against the head with the lads giving 100% up front. Navan did manage to score a consolidation try with ten minutes to go but with Stones adding an additional two tries from Andrew Kealy and the man of the match Dylan Fawsitt both converted by Andrew Kealy the win and bonus point were well secured.
