Greystones travelled to Nenagh with high expectations after their 55 -0 victory over Ards last weekend. Nenagh too had high expectations having only had one home defeat this season and were unbeaten at home last year. Stones were up for the task and in what was a brilliant display of rugby by Stones that saw them run in seven tries
Nenagh Ormond make a strong start to the match and stated their intentions by going eight nil up early on but Stones replied when James Power saw the space and executed a cross field kick to Andrew Kealy who crossed the line to score stones first try of the afternoon and duly convert .
Stones had now taken control of the game and where awarded a penalty on the line five minutes later with Stones securing the ball from the line-out and passing out the line for James Power to score under the post with Kealy converting again to now give Stones the lead 14 points to 8.
Ronan Carroll found space on the wing five minutes later and crossed over into the corner for try number three. A super kick from the side line against the wind by Andrew Kealy secured the additional two points leaving Stones well in control at 21 – 8. Nenagh took the opportunity to kick a penalty for three points as the last play of the first half.
Stones once again come out a full steam in the second half and applied pressure on Nenagh which resulted in Darragh Duggan scoring a try five minutes after the re-start with Andrew Kealy once again slotting home the conversion Stones were now in a very strong position and needed to maintain control of the game and intended to do so and not give anything away.
Nenagh Ormond were not hoverer prepared to give up and mounted a period of attacking the Stones line which saw the best twenty minutes of defensive play seen in the Ulster Band League this season. This was a stunning display by Greystones with every man committed to defending the line and conceding nothing. Nenagh’s award was a bitter pill for them when Stones turned fron defence to attack and Ronan Carroll crossed for his second try of the day. Stones were now 33 to 11 with only a quarter of the match to play.
Stones finished off the afternoon with two additional tries as Alan O’Tooles try converted by Ross Spillane and in the closing five minutes Dylan Fawsitt popped a pass to Aaron Higgs to score with Ross once again converting.
Commenting after the match Barry Holmes Club Captain said "After coming away with a big score last week against Ards we had to keep the head focused on our next match. We knew they were going to be a tough team to play away and they lived up to their reputation, the first 15mins was anyones game, very physical but we stuck to our game plan and got the result we were looking for"
What a performance Stones well done.
