Match Report Greystones V Skerries Sunday 19th Feb

Greystones 26 Skerries 27

Tries:                       D Mcmanus x2,
                                     P Sullivan x2

Conversions       O James x3

The morning started out badly for the under 14`s with news that 3 of our players had to cry off due to injury, S Doyle, C O Reilly, R Breetveld, we hope to see them back playing very soon! This left us with only one forward replacement and an extra special mention has to go to our back row player Ciaran Walsh who offered to play this game in the front row, so with these squad limitations we decided to change our game plan which resulted in 5 players playing in different positions for the first time in a competitive match.

The match started with Greystones winning the toss and electing to play with the wind for the first half. As with the previous match Greystones came out of the blocks fantastically with Peter Sulliavan scoring straight from the Kick off, Oran James converted. Stones kept attacking and with some good ball carrying from Evan Farrelly and Oran James our second try was not far away. A wonderful call to go down the blind side by our sniping scrumhalf Jack Megannety and a super draw pass by Oran left Danny Mcmanus sprint clear of the Skerries defence to score out wide, Oran James converted. Skerries came back into the game and scored a converted try leaving the score 14-7.

The Greystones defence was called into action as Skerries attacked hard but a huge hit by our first time flanker Mark Kenny and a bone crunching hit in the midfield by Sean Horgan put a stop to the attacks. Stones were rewarded for this defensive work with a third try. Following some lovely link work from both forwards and back Danny Mcmanus again touched down in the corner; 5 meters in from the touch line our ever reliable kicker Oran James coolly slotted the extra 2 points. Skerries came back hard again and scored another try leaving the score now 21-12. With Skerries now growing in confidence they tried a chip and case only for Peter Sullivan our perfectly placed full back to gather and run it back in for a try from about 40 meters out, score now 26-12. With about 15minutes left Skerries dug very deep and ran in three try’s leaving the final score 27-26 and leaving Greystones counting the cost of missed tackles.

As is becoming a ritual now we all headed for the bar where thanks to all the Mums and Dads there were sandwiches and cake for both teams. Many thanks to all who were involved!   The under 14`s squad would like to congratulate the Junior section on there recent success with the J1`S winning the double and the J4`S on winning the league!

Match Report Greystones V Malahide Sunday 12th Feb

Greystones 24 Malahide 21

Tries:                             P Sullivan x2,
                                           A Byrne,
                                           S Doyle

Convversions.         O James x2

The morning started well with the news that we had been given the pleasure of playing our match on the main pitch, with special thanks to our superb groundsman Willy Byrne. After a rousing captains speech from Aaron Byrne, we raced into an early lead straight from the kick off, our out-half Oran James perfectly weighted kick off landed just past the Malahide 10 and Peter Sullivan jumped highest to claim the ball and ran straight through the Malahide defence to score the opening try.

We only had to wait a few minutes until our second try, after working our way down to the Malahide 22 meter line with some lovely passing moves, a fantastic 20m break by our all hitting ball carrying captain Aaron Byrne brought us to within 2 meters of the line and a delicate offload to our hard running No 8 Stefan Doyle resulted in our second try, Oran James converted from 15meters from the left for a 12-0 lead. Malahide then hit back with a well worked score down the narrow side.

Into the second half Peter Sullivan made one of his now patented runs where he beats defenders for fun and scored, stones lead 17-7. At this time we emptied our bench and made a raft of changes. Malahide hit back almost straight away with two quick trys leaving them ahead by 4 with about 5 minutes to go. But not to be out done Stones kept attacking and wave after wave of attack and superb ball carrying by the hard hitting Jonny O Connor and Ciaran Walsh had us just short of the Malahide line, where Aaron Byrne leading by example, took it upon himself and drove over from 2 yards for the try and Oran James again converted leaving the score 24-21 in favour of Greystones. Malahide came back straight from the restart and forced a turnover but a fantastic cover tackle by Peter Sullivan along the touch line put an end to the match. Stone win 24-21

Match Report Greystones v Barnhall Sunday 27th Nov
Greystones 19 Barnhall 17

Tries: P Sullivan x3
Conv:P Sullivan x2

Our trip to Barnhall for our first away leinster league match of the season started early on Sunday morning.

Greystones started into the pace of the match very well scoing two quick tries. The first try was scored by Peter Sullivan after a smart passing move resulting in winger Danny McManus breaking down the left and offloading to Sully to score out wide. 5 - 0 Stones. Our second try came a few minutes later, following some great work at the breakdown and strong defence leading to a turnover which Sully pounced on to break clear and score, he also added the conversion, 12 - 0 Stones. Greystones came straight on the attack from the restart and continued to put Barnhall under all sorts of pressure resulting in our forwards turning over 2 scrums against the head, a huge reward to our front row of Mario Di Tofano, Aaron Byrne (Cpt) and Oisin Dougan. Following some great support play from the pack we attacked the Barnhall line but our second row Mark Kenny was held up short of the line after some last gasp Barnhall defence just before half time.

We started the second half a bit slow and let Barnhall back into the game with 2 quick tries, suddenly it was 12-12. Barnhall scored another try from a penalty move leaving the score 17 - 12. Following an honest team talk behind the posts we started to come back into the game led by our all hitting, ball carrying back row of Evan Farrelly, Stefan Doyle and Reuban Breetveld. Our defence stood up strong and stopped every attack that Barnhall threw at us. The tone was set for the final part of the match after a bone crunching tackling from our hard hitting out half Oran James. We continued to push for our third try of the morning and in the final minute of the game, our scrum half Jack Megannety yet again dug the ball out from the base of a ruck and following some good hand by our centers Conor o Reilly and Mark Crowley, the ball was passed to Sully who had come into the line from fullback to dance down the wing to score under the posts. With the game tied at 17 - 17 with the final kick to come, Sully stepped up and nailed the kick, Stones win 19 - 17.

Special mention has to go to Bruce Thomas who was seriously injured in the warm up for the seconds match. We all hope the Brucie recovers quickly from the collar bone injury and is back with our squad as soon as possible, our entire squad wishes Bruice all the best.

Lenister League Competition

January        29th    Home v Ashbourne

All matches are subject to change. Kick off time to be arranged.

Greystones 40 Blackrock 5 U14 9th October 11

Try:    Mario Di Tofano, Oran James, Danny McManus x2, Peter Sullivan, Reuban Breetveld

Conv: Peter Sullivan x3, Oran James x2

Our first match of the season was a home match against Blackrock in very windy conditions. The match was arranged as a friendly match played in 3 20 minute periods with a roll on roll off substitute system where every player got some game time.

The first third was a very tight match, with Blackrock playing a tight game into the wind. They scored an early try from a pick and go off a scrum on the Greystones 5m line. Straight from the restart Blackrock came attacking again but the Greystones team put on a great defensive performance, with some huge hits and great tackling to keep Blackrock from scoring any more points.

Down by only 5 points starting the second period, we made 13 changes to the starting team and almost straight from the kick off we were in front! With some fantastic rucking and great attacking flair we ran in 4 tries, scored by Mario, Oran, Danny and Peter with 3 of these converted superbly by Peter, especially into the wind! This meant we started the third quarter 26-5 ahead! This period started with 14 men each after a few injuries were picked up in what was a hugely physical match. We again made more changes and we pushed further ahead with 2 more tries from Danny and Reuban both converted by Oran!

This game was a fantastic start to the season for our squad. Congratulations to each and every member of the squad who preformed fantastically. We would especially like to thank the players who we asked to play in new positions. Finally we would like to thank all the mums who provided sandwiches, tea and coffee up in the bar for us after the match, it was greatly appreciated!!
