Metro Cup Greystones 42 St Marys 29

Greystones welcomed Lansdowne to Dr Hickey Park on Sunday morning and with thanks to Willie Byrne we were allowed to play on the main pitch!!

The game started with Stones kicking off.Lansdowne quickly took hold of the game and scored a try early on but the stones team, lead again by our fearless leader Reuben Breetveld, were only waking up and worked our way towards the Lansdowne line! We were on the front foot and following a huge hit from the front 5 we turned over a scrum which allowed Cian Cahalan to unleash our backs for the first time and ended with D Mc who showed his pace scoring in the left corner 5-5! Our second try of the morning wasn't far away, we attacked down the right hand side and a fantastic offload from our battering no8 Jonny o Connor let Oisin Dougan dot down under the posts, stones lead 10-5! Our defence was then put to the test as Lansdowne came on the attack but we with stood the pressure with great front up tackles which resulted in a turnover! Scrum Stones just outside the 22, ball secured at the base of the scrum, Jonny picks, another deft offload to support player Reuben who pops it to Chippy to drive for the line, trytime stones! Extra 2 tagged on by Eoin Mctigue! 17-5 is how the first half finished!
The start of the second half came with 3 substitutions, and Stones securing the restart! A great run by our full back Jonesy and we were awarded a penalty just outside the 22, Harry tapped and set Mushy off on a run towards the line but he was hauled down about 10 meters out but managed to pop the ball out of the tackle to Jonny to score 22-5! The Greystones defence was watertight with Conan Doyle, Josh Holt and Matty making tackle after tackle and then the forwards turning over ball on the floor! This defensive pressure resulted in yet another Greystones penalty just outside 22, Oisin took the ball on passed to Jonny and on to our big 2nd row Luke Stephenson to crashed through 3 players to score! Score now stood at 27-5 to the Greystones boys! Our constant attacking pressure at scrum time, thanks to our front row of Oisin Aido and Chippy, allowed Jonny to pick again, off load to Reuban and set up a try for our big hitter Matty! 32-5! Straight from the restart the ball didn't travel the required 10m but Mushy decided to take it on anyway, crashed through a few tackles and let the ball go wide! A great quick pass from Macker at 10 put D Mc in space and allowed him to out-sprint his opposite winger to score 37-5! The call to make changes then came, 6 in the space of 5 minutes resulted a completely new shape to our team, we had now made 9 changes since the start of the game meaning every player in the squad got a run out! This took time for us to adjust and at this level you just can't give that amount of time to a good team like Lansdowne and they were rewarded for there constant pressure running in try's of there own! Not to be undone, we finished off the game with another try, we pushed towards the Lansdowne line after a great tackle from Brucie. A few phase followed and Matty then picked from a ruck to crash over the line for the final try of the game! Final score 42-29 to Greystones!
This game was a significant run out for a few of our players, notably its was the first game in a Greystones Jersey for both Fergus and Nathan and both players acquitted themselves very well and we look forward to them playing many more games in a Stones jersey. We also had 3 players returning from illness and injury, Gav, Stefan and Cormac. Both Doyler and Meaghersy have had a rough season so far with injuries but its great to finally have them back training and playing now and over the next few weeks we will help to build the strength back up gradually.
The road of recovery can be long and hard but small steps and you will get there!!
We must also not forget the army load of Sandwiches and Cakes made by the parents yet again. I know that the players greatly appreciate the grub after a tough game, this all creates a great atmosphere within the club after our home games

Leinster Cup Greystones 15 St Mary's 5

Sunday 17th Feb 2013
Leinster Cup
Greystones 15 St Mary's 5

Tries: Harry Blair, Matthew Williams, Oisin Dougan

The game started with Greystones kicking off. Both teams had a shaky first few minutes trying to get accustom to the heavy pitch and swirling wind! The Greystones forwards were the first to get the upper hand in the game and following a great break from our full back Aaron Jones we found ourselves camped in the St Mary's 22 where a knock on resulted in a Mary's scrum. The Greystones pack would not give up the ball that easy and drove the Marys pack off their own scrum allowing Scrum Half Harry Blair to recover the ball and sprint to the line for the opening score of the game! St Mary's were then reduced to 14 men following a yellow card for a high tackle but some handling errors and strange penalties at Scrum times meant that we didn't capitalise on the man advantage.

The second half started much like the first half finished with some ferocious hits and carries! Mary's started to put some phases together and were rewarded when we were questionably reduced to 14 men for a professional foul after some heroic defence by our back row. Marys continued to push for a score and after keeping them out they eventually used the extra man advantage to score a deserved try! With the game tied at 5 points apiece the Greystones team lead by Reuban Breetveld stepped it up a gear and put the pressure straight back on from the restart. Some great carries by Jonny o Connor, Luke Fox and a huge clean out by Luke Stephenson gave Harry the perfect platform to spray the ball wide and release the backs, a few quick passes later and the ball came to Matthew Williams who showed great strength to hold off 2 defenders to score in the corner! Score now stood at 10-5 to Greystones. St Mary's came back again and forced a turnover from which they attacked but they were stopped abruptly by Conan Doyle in our midfield with a massive hit that resulted in a turnover. Both teams had chances to attack but both defences stood tall. St Mary's had a great opportunity too have a go out wide but this was quickly stopped by a fantastic tackle from our new winger Josh Holt, starting his first game for us. With just one minute left St Marys had a line-out on their own 22m line which was knocked on and we from the resulting scrum we continued to attack the Mary's line getting closer and closer with each carry and after a few more phases Oisin Dougan finally crashed over the line to score the third and final try.
Final score 15-5

A Special mention of thanks must go to the Mums and Dads who made a table loads of sandwiches, buns and goodies for the players. There were lots of happy players, coaches and supporters in the club house after the match.

U15 Season Update

                                 U15_evening_training

We currently have approx 25 players in the GRFC U15`S squad. We also have a number of players who are currently unavailable to play for us as they have been selected to represent their individual schools in the Leinster Junior Cup competition. We currently train twice a week, training times detailed below. Like the last few season, we have also arranged a few additional training sessions. The first session we arranged was to Angels Boxing Club in Sandyford Industrial Estate which saw our squad (coaches included) put through a fantastic strength and conditioning work out. This session introduced the team to a different type of fitness, motivation and team work. We will be arranging another session before the end of the season! We have also had training sessions on the astro-turf all weather pitches in Greystones after one of our Sunday morning sessions was cancelled due to the weather.

At under 15`s level we have the opportunity to nominate some players to attend Leinster screen training sessions. These screening sessions are for players who do not attend rugby playing schools. The Leinster Branch Rugby development coaches run a few training sessions before officially screening players and picking a squad to be part of the Leinster summer training camps during the summer with the focus of playing for the Leinster Metro Team next season. This is a great opportunity for all the players involved to get extra coaching from some of the best coaches in the country and hopefully Greystones will have a few players selected. We have sent 8 of our players forward so far. We have also being running additional specific training sessions for these players.

Training Times:

Wednesday Night: On the pitch for 6.45-7.45
Sunday Mornings: On the pitch for 11.00-12.30

All times are subject to change due to weather and matches, we will advise via text/email should any changes arise.

All new players are very welcome please contact Diane for any information.
