After the frustration of a play off final defeat last season and near misses in each of the previous seasons Greystones wrapped up the Ulster Bank League Div2B title in style and with it promotion to 2A next season with an emphatic seven try 45 – 10 victory over Old Crescent on Saturday afternoon. Playing in front of the biggest crowd witnessed at Dr Hickey Park for many years Padraig Geoghegan set the tempo with his opening try after just two minutes with a great break down the left wing and wrapped up the match with the closing try on 70 mins. In between Eoin Marmion grabbed two tries along with tries from Con Callan, Robin O’Sullivan and Andy Roberts. Imperious all season following his long injury layoff Andrew Kealy kicked a total of five conversions on the day answering each of the surgeons who recommended retirement three years ago.
We now return to Division 2A after a break of five years with a young team ready and capable of taking the club higher.
Thanks to our coaching and backroom team
With statistics that set Greystones as the top scoring team across all five AIL divisions special thanks must go to our coaching and back up team for such a spectacular season.
Led by head coach Kevin Lewis and supported by forwards coach Warren O’Kelly, backs player/coach Barry Lynn and Strength and Conditioning coach Olan Savage along with Physio Cameron McKeever the team scored a total of 663 points conceding just 244 leaving a massive points differential of 419 and an average of almost 37 points per game. In addition to winning 16 out of 18 in the AIL we also enjoyed victories over Blackrock (2A) and Old Wesley (1B) in the Leinster Senior cup and but for fixture clashes would have tested ourselves against Old Belvedere (1A) in the cup semi final.
Thanks also go to the back up team led by First team manager Paul Lennon, Kit man John (Whizzer) Whiston, Karl Jordan and Peter McParland for match videos
