J1’s Champions of Leinster

Greystones J1's took on Old Wesley in the final of the Leinster Shield on Sunday 29th. The weather played its part in the match as the wind and rain made conditions difficult The scoreline reflected the tightness of the game with Greystones winning by 9 points to 7.

Greystones played with great passion and committment as they were under pressure for most of the second half and defended wave after wave of attack and showed why they deserve to be champions  .

Eoin Toolan's Blog From Rugby World Cup Week 6 Ireland v Wales

Week6a    Week 6: Ireland v Wales

Otago Stadium may as well have been in Ireland given the fact 99% of the crowd were Irish by birth or heritage. The atmosphere was amongst the best I have experienced and the feel good factor after the final whistle was immense.

There had been two itineraries put in place by the logistics department prior to the game against Italy. Plan A (beat Italy) was flying to Wellington on the Monday and a detailed schedule for the week there in terms of training sessions/venues etc. Plan B  (Lose to Italy) was eh flying home the next day.  Obviously only management were privy to this information but the sense of uncertainty about where we would be in 24 hours made the build up to the game even more excruciating.

Therefore it was seriously satisfying feeling when we checked in to the Intercontinental Hotel based in the centre of New Zealand’s capital. However this satisfaction was short lived when I realised my laptop had given up the ghost. Bearing in mind my profession this was NOT GOOD!  Six -day turnarounds are challenging for all departments within the management group and when you factor in a travel day from South to North Island you are pretty much on the back foot from the outset of the week.  So my laptop taking early retirement was the last thing I needed.

Managed to retrieve all high priority data from the hard drive (including my itunes library… crucial) and by Tuesday evening things were back on track.  Unfortunately it meant the blog had to be put on the backburner… Sorry I know it had brightened up everyone’s week since I’ve been away!

With a heavy workload and brutal weather I had seen nothing of Wellington aside from the Hotel and training ground up until Thursday night when I managed to get out for a meal for Ger Carmody’s birthday with the rest of the management. If you’re ever in Wellington go to the Dockside restaurant…Tasty.

Preparations had gone really well for the game and remarkably we had 30 players training that week, which was a credit to the medical and strength and conditioning staff.  Like the five weeks previous, the attention to detail and professionalism that the players showed in the build up to the game was outstanding. All that waited now was the 6pm kick off.

Sitting back in my apartment in Dublin it still hasn’t sunk in. Not really sure what to write to be honest. There were so many highs on the trip, none more so than the scenes at the team hotel prior to the team’s departure to Wellington Stadium, and for it be over in an instant is so disappointing. It was a pleasure to work alongside the 32 Players and 20 Management who were in New Zealand for the last six weeks.  Shame it had to end.

Eoin Toolan's Blog From Rugby World Cup Week 5 Ireland v Italy

Week5a  Week 5: Ireland v Italy

Highlight of the tour to date (outside of the rugby obviously) was at Rotorua International airport on our way to Dunedin.  Damien Varley was coerced into playing a few tunes on a guitar that had been stolen off some poor local Maori woman who had been minding her own business. Having not expected a whole lot from him (majority of squad are tone deaf) he proceeded to blast out a few Christy Moore songs in impressive fashion and had the rest of players, management and general punters joining in (have a look for it on you tube). He is now a banker for all forthcoming Ireland tours purely for entertainment purposes.

The team hotel in Dunedin looked like a crime zone from CSI when we arrived on the Monday morning. Having thought there must have been a murder or something the night before we were quickly reassured it was merely the clean-up operation following England’s stay there for the previous 2 weeks! No surprise there so!

Spent the down day at a place called St Clair, which overlooks the ocean. Some of us considered going surfing but those plans were brought to a grinding halt when we observed a plaque in memory of those who had been killed by great white sharks in the area. Coffee and cake quickly became far more appealing!

Squad’s training venue was Carisbrook stadium, also known as The House of Pain, which is due to be knocked down after the World Cup! With facilities similar to that of Seapoint RFC you can understand why! Session lengths were slowly being reduced with more of a focus on quality rather than quantity to allow players to fully recover from 3 test matches on the bounce.

Ironically the weather had been unbelievably good in Dunedin all week (sunshine had been at a premium up until this point) and was forecast to be the same for game day, which was of little consequence given the new Otago Stadium was indoors! Built in just over a year the place looked really impressive when we got our first glance at it at the Captain’s Run.  Scene was set for a noisy encounter against the Ities!!
