Greystones win in Limerick
Thomond 10.  Greystones RFC 15

Ulster Bank League Division 2A

Played:               Saturday 5th November 2011

Venue:                Liam Fitzgerald Park

Penalties:           Andrew Kealy (5)

One week on from a great victory in the local derby and it was time for Stones to head to Munster for a clash with Thomond RFC. With a lot of changes to the team from the previous week it was time for some to step up to a new level and the lads did not disappoint coming away with a well earned three points for the Leinster side.  There was talk in clubhouse after the game of a two nil victory to Leinster this weekend with Leinster having come out on top in Lansdowne Road on the Friday night. There was a very generous and warm welcome extended to Stones and Thomond were also were gracious and sporting in defeat.

The match was played in bright sunny conditions with Andrew Kealy once again giving a display in kicking skills converting the two penalty opportunities presented to him to give the visitors a 0 – 6 lead  after the first quarter. The Munster side did however display a dominance in the forwards in the first half and came out on top in the scrums and did try and impose this advantage but full credit to the Stones defence they soaked up all that was thrown at them and bar a slip in defence that cost 7 points found themselves only 1 point behind at the break with a score line of 7 – 6

Greystones showed great composure in the second half and attacked the home side from the off they were unlucky not to score a try as they made many visits to the opponents 22 but could not get across the line. Stones were rewarded with three kickable penalty opportunities that Andrew Kealy made no mistakes in slotting over. Thomond did close the gap to 10 -12 with fifteen minutes to go but the score line opened up to 10 -15 minutes later when Kealy kicked the last points of the game.

Full credit to the Greystones team for an excellent performance away from home and in particular to the lads that stepped up to replace the long list of injured players a great result. The First XV are away to Seapoint next Saturday 12th November in the semi final of the Leinster Shield Kick off at 2.30pm
