Presidents Message

Jerome O' Brien GRFCDear Fellow Members and Guests,

On behalf of Greystones RFC, I would like to extend the warmest of County Wicklow welcomes to all members, guests and visitors to Dr Hickey Park. It is a singular honour for me to be elected the 45th President of the club in it’s 79th year, and to follow in the footsteps of previous legendary incumbents including our co founder, Eric Archer, still going strong in his 97th year. On that note, may I offer our heartfelt sympathies to the family of our esteemed Past President, Brian O’Connor, who passed away last season.

Last season, our Senior Squad came agonisingly close to promotion to Division 2A of the Ulster Bank League and led once more by Captain, Bobby Clancy, and Head Coach, Kevin Lewis, we can again challenge for and hopefully gain promotion. Our Junior teams had great success last season and with added focus this season, I look forward to continued success. I’m delighted to see that our Women’s team is increasing in numbers and this brings a welcome and refreshing dynamic to the club. I will be taking a keen interest in the fortunes of the Women’s team. Our Minis and Youths section, boys and girls, is very close to my heart and is the envy of many bigger clubs. These kids are the foundation of our club and must be nurtured for the future.

The rugby side of the club would not function without the volunteer managers, coaches, referees and administrators and in thanking them, I would like to wish them all a happy and fulfilling season ahead.

The Executive Committee, ably led by Chairman, Gary Nolan, and Club Manager, Eddie Lonergan, are the unsung heroes of the club. They contribute willingly and generously of their time to run the club prudently and efficiently and we would not survive without them.

Our Sponsors are the lifeblood of our existence and I would like to personally thank every sponsor, particularly our main sponsor, Heatons, for your generous support. I would ask all members to reciprocate and support our sponsor’s businesses.

Last season, the club premises underwent a significant upgrade and we now have facilities to be proud of. I would urge all members to get the best out of the facilities by attending matches and functions and bringing friends and guests down to enjoy the community spirit for which we are justly famous.

Finally, I hope everybody has an exciting and enjoyable season.

Come on the Stones

Jerome O’Brien, President, Greystones RFC 2016-17
