Dear Fellow Members and Guests,
It is a great pleasure and honour to be elected the 46th President of Greystones RFC, and I hope to fulfil the role to the best if my abilities. I could not carry out the role without the significant support I receive from our Executive Committee and volunteers in the club. My presidency started off very sadly. Our legendary co-founder Eric Archer passed away in June in his 98th year. Eric was a living legend and a true gentleman. He will be sadly missed by all the members of Greystones and the greater rugby family throughout Ireland and further afield. He has left a wonderful legacy which is Greystones RFC. (See Appreciation/Feature in this match programme)
On behalf of Greystones RFC I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all members, supporters, visitors, and match officials that visit Dr Hickey Park.
Congratulations to all concerned for achieving promotion to Division 2A last season. This was a wonderful achievement and the type of rugby played by our team was at times breath-taking, the way rugby should be played. I would like to congratulate Dan Mannion on his appointment as captain for the coming season, and I wish head coach Kevin Lewis, team manager Paul Lennon assistant coaches Warren O’Kelly, Barry Lynn Olan Savage, along with Dan and the squad every success in coming season.
For the coming season I would like to encourage more players to continue to play rugby, to enjoy all the benefits of taking part in a team sport and to help strengthen our Junior Rugby Squad. I also wish our Managers, Coaches, Players of our 2nds, 3rds, Under 20s, Seagulls and Women’s team every success in the coming season.
Our youth section continues to thrive and great credit must go to Keith O’Brien and his army of coaches and volunteers. Keith is stepping down as Youth Director and on behalf of all members I want to thank him for a magnificent job well done. I wish Paddy McCann new Youth Director every success in the coming season.
All our sponsors, corporate and individual are a vital part of our club. Heatons who sponsored us for the last 3 years are stepping down and I would like to thank John O’Neill for their sponsorship. We are very fortunate to be able to welcome Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock Ltd as our new main sponsors. Peter is a former player and Past President and Ross is a former player. On behalf of everyone in Greystones RFC I would like to thank them for their generous sponsorship. I would also like to thank all our other sponsors and I would encourage all member support them in their business whenever possible.
I mentioned at our AGM that the main theme of my presidency would be to encourage more members to be volunteers. In a recent Survey the IRFU identified over 60 roles that need to be filled from membership secretary to referees coordinator, youth coaches etc . Most roles can be managed with a commitment of just 2-4 hours per week. For far too long too few have been doing too much and we need more volunteers to spread the load. As the saying goes ‘Many hands make light work’.
May I extend a very warm welcome to Greystones RFC and I look forward to seeing you support all our teams at every level. .
Fran Nolan, President,
Greystones RFC 2017-18
