President, Greystones RFC 2025/26 Season

Welcome to Greystones Rugby Clubs Dr Hickey Park to the spiritual home of rugby in Wicklow

It’s a real honour—and a bit surreal, truth be told—to be stepping into the role of President for the 2025/26 season. Greystones RFC has been part of my life for more years than I care to admit. From muddy knees in the minis to running out as Club Captain in 2000 and again in 2004 (I clearly hadn’t learned my lesson the first time), this club has given me memories, friendships, and bruises that I’ll carry for life.

One of the proudest moments of my rugby journey wasn’t lifting silverware or scoring in the corner—it was lining out alongside my son Kenneth in the Greystones jersey. Watching him come through the junior ranks and onto the senior squad has been a joy—and a reminder that, despite what my back tells me, the years really have flown by.

Greystones RFC is a club built not just on talent, but on character. Yes, we’ve produced players who have gone on to wear green and even don the red of the Lions—names like Nick Popplewell , Paul Mc Naughton, Spud Murphy are etched into our proud history. But more importantly, this is a club for those who simply love the game. Whether you’re a first-team flyer or a Seagulls stalwart, a mini-rugby rookie or a loyal supporter perched on the bank with a coffee (or something stronger), you’re part of what makes this club special.

I want to thank Anne Bowes for her outstanding leadership last season. As our first female President, Anne not only made history—she also set a fantastic example of what this club stands for: inclusivity, community, and passion for the sport. She’s handed over the baton with the club in fine fettle.

As we look ahead to another season, I’m excited to support our teams across all levels—from our senior men and women’s squads to the minis, youths, juniors, Seagulls and beyond. I’m continually amazed by the dedication of our players, coaches, volunteers and supporters. Thank you to everyone who gives their time, energy and good humour (and occasionally their cars for away games) to keep this place buzzing.

Of course, none of this happens without the generosity of our sponsors, I’d like to give a special mention to Peter&Ross Doyle, Dwyer Nolan, NFP,  who have supported us for many years and hopefully will continue to do so. Your backing allows us to invest in our players, our facilities and our future. Thank you.

To visiting teams, officials and supporters: you’re very welcome here. Enjoy our pitch, our pavilion and the famously warm Greystones hospitality. And to our own loyal supporters—keep showing up, shouting loud, and cheering with heart. You might even see me make a cameo behind the bar… though I’m far more reliable supping pints than passing them these days.

Here’s to a season of hard graft, big hits, bigger laughs, and the kind of moments we’ll still be talking about at the 2035 reunion.

Yours in rugby,
Liam Murphy
